Chapitre cinquieme
Chapter Fifth
Chumantou.
Chumantou. I answered everything you asked me. Do you still want to ask me new questions?
Biach. Apprenez moy encore a mesurer le tems.
Biach. Learn to measure time again.
Chumantou.
Chumantou. Two Poromanu make an Onu, and 3 of these Onu express the amount of time that the sunlight uses to go from the hole made in a window to the pavement. 3 Onu make a Bedo, 3 Bedo a lobo, and 3 lobo express the amount of time used to close and open the eyelid of the eye. The time it takes to open and close the eye 3 times is the moment. 5 moments make 1 Casta, 15 Casta make a Logou, and 15 Logou make an hour. Indian time is only 24 minutes long. 2 hours do a Muhurto. 8 or 7 hours make up the Prohor. I said 8, or 7, because the Prohor is more or less long depending on whether the days are themselves more or less. This is the instrument we use to measure the hours. We have a small hollow copper cylinder weighing 6 rupees. We make a small hole in it, and put it in a vase full of water. The time which it employs to fill itself measures the hour. 60 of these hours make eight Prohors, that is to say, our 24 hours. The day is made up of 4 Prohors, and the night the same. When the days are short, the Prohors for the day are only 7 hours, and those for the night are 8, and vice versa. The months are composed and are divided by the new and full moon. The year is made up of 12 months, and is divided by the different seasons, which are six in number, namely, the cold season, the foggy season, spring, Tete, the rainy season and autumn. The summer equinox and the winter equinox divide it into two equal parts.
Biach.
Biach. You explained to me what concerns the measurement of time. Tell me now what was the duration of each age?
Chumantou.
Chumantou. There are 4 ages. Here is what was the duration of each one. The first age lasted 4,000 years, the second 3,000, the third 2,000, the last one finally, at 10,000. This must be understood from the years of Bramma, that is to say of god. Because if we measure their duration by the duration of our years, the 1st age lasted 162,000 years, the 2nd 129,600, the 3rd 64,000. The fourth should last 420,300 years. This is what they say about the length of these different ages, but this is all pure fiction. At the end of each age everything perishes by the deluge. God created all beings anew, and therefrom formed a new age.
Biach.
Biach. I will never tire of asking you new questions. Since you never tire of answering me, tell me a word about the history of Chuajanbou Mounou?
Chumantou.
Chumantou. Bramma has 4 faces and had several children, among others Dokio and Chuajanbou Mounou. Celuy addressing his father, and asked him, what was the end for which he had brought him into the world, and with which he should occupy himself? Bramma gave him a wife so that he could propagate mankind, and said to him: my son, worship the true God, and serve only him. Also teach men and your children to adore and serve him. By this you will attract his blessings and graces on you.
Biach.
Biach. I have a doubt that tires me a lot, and it is only you who can solve it. Tell me, then, what reason did Bramma formerly have for incarnating as a pig?
Chumantou.
Chumantou. I do not know of any incarnation of Bramma. Tell me even what you said about it?
Biach.
Biach. Bramma, father of Mounou, once addressed his best wishes to Vichenou the Supreme Being. He listened to them kindly, and asked him what he wanted. How do you expect, said Bramma, that I create beings? The earth is completely submerged, and there is no place where they can subsist. Vichenou, having heard these words, immediately made the resolution to incarnate, and it was in the bosom of a trout. At the time he was born he was only an inch tall. But he soon grew to the size of an elephant. Poulastoudou, Morisi, Otri, Onguira, and several others, all children of Dokio Prosapoti, addressed their homage to him. Adoration, they cried when they saw him, adoration to the God born of a trout. He is the Supreme being. He is the eternal God of the Gods. Give us, in your mercy, a place where we can subsist, and we will give you eternal thanksgiving. Adoration to the God who is under the figure of a pig. We throw ourselves at your feet. We put our trust in it. It is for us that you have taken this figure. Your presence dispels all our fears. Adoration, therefore, once again to the pig. We recognize you as the creator, and the curator, of all things. Complete your work, and support our wishes. It is not without design that you have taken such a figure. Use it to make the earth float, and reassure it. The pig, pleasantly flattered by these loüanges, moves its paws, utters a loud cry, leaps and throws itself into the water. At this sight, all that there were penitents uttered a cry of joy. Meanwhile, Hironnio, the first of the giants, seeing him dive to seize the earth and make it float, he fights and throws a hail of arrows on him. The pig is pierced with it. He falls. But finally, making a last effort, he kills the giant, and rubs his body with his blood. This is more or less what I said about the incarnation of the first being as a pig.
Chumantou.
Chumantou. He who speaks badly of his Guru, who despises or disregards the Vedans, but above all, he who blasphemes the divinity, is a monster to be carefully avoided, that we must exclude from commerce men, like a pernicious man, and that we must, finally, punish by the most terrible and rigorous punishments. That if one does not have authority in hand, one must at least, when one feels these impieties vomiting, plug one's ears and withdraw. [You are, perverse man, one of those who only open their mouths to vomit blasphemies against the divinity.] Therefore withdraw incessantly and no longer appear before my eyes. The state of penitent that I profess does not give me the right to punish you. But if there was a King in this country, you would not escape him. I would ask him to have your head cut off, and deliver the world from the most perverse of all men, and from the most unhappy.
